FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

1-Is Fasting mandatory?

For certain tests it is obligatory to be at least 10 hours fasting.(Triglycerides, cholesterol and derivatives, glucose, uric acid) as they are dependant of alimentary factors.

For other tests food doesn't affect the tests but it causes turbidity of the serum that may affect dosage. That's why it is preferable to have the tests done away from meal

2-How do I do a urinary culture?

It is important to have a sterile container (from the lab or from any pharmacy). Then you have to clean the genital area with an antiseptic ( ie Septivon,Mercryl, diluted Dettol in water). After this you catch a little urine from the middle of the miction into the container and you bring it to the lab as soon as possible as any delay causes germs to multiply and affects the result

For babies, special urine container are available. It consists of bags with adhesive borders. You clean the genital area with an antiseptic (from the front to the back for little girls),you dry with a clean cotton and then you take of the adhesive band and you stick the bag in a way it can catch the urine flow. Then you just have to wait for the baby to pee!Knowing that the bag needs to be changed every half an hour and that the cleaning procedure is then done again.Once that the baby has done it,you take off the bag slowly, you stick the borders together with the adhesive band and you bring the bag to the lab.

Noteworthy the fact that it isn't necessary to have the first urine of the morning!
